This fascinating mansion, known also as an Italianate-style villa has 36 rooms and 19,000 sq. feet. It was the home to Adelicia Hayes Franklin Acklen Cheatham. Adelicia had a very intense life, losing her fiance right before marriage. She later married a wealthy bachelor twenty-eight years older than she. They had four children, and all of them died before the age of twelve. She was left the wealthiest woman in America after her husband died, seven years after they were married. Then she married a young attorney from Alabama. They built the Belmont. Their estate contained an art gallery, conservatories, lavish gardens, aviary, lake and zoo. Today, the Belmont still reflects the elaborate architecture and decor of the day. The gardens are now part of the college campus.
